Dinner with the Stars 2018 A Success

With the theme “Midnight at The Moulin Rouge,” the annual “Dinner With the Stars” fund raising gala for Playhouse 2000 brought the elegance of 1930’s Paris to The Cailloux Theater lobby on Saturday. More than 150 attended, the largest crowd in the seven year history of the event.
Eye pleasing decorations by Tish Miller greeted guests as they arrived at The Cailloux Theater for a 6:00 wine and hors d’oeuvres hour, during which more than 35 quality items were available for bids in a silent auction, which was coordinated by event Chair Sarah Distel.

Dinner, supervised by Ken Harris, was catered by Rails, a Café at The Depot, and featured a choice of Beef Bourguinon or Salmon Meuniere accompanied by wines selected for the occasion by Patrick Wilt of Grape Juice.

The elegant dessert of Dark Chocolate Pots de Crème was a fitting finale to a fine meal, and soon the guests were ushered into the auditorium for the evening’s entertainment.
The show, one of the elements that makes “Dinner With the Stars” a unique event, focused on the music of an American who visited the 1920’s Moulin Rouge early in his career, George Gershwin.
Entitled “The Artistry of George Gershwin,” the show began with songs from his early Broadway successes performed by Playhouse 2000 Executive Director Jeffrey Brownand returning artist Hayley Davis, whom many in the audience remembered from her roles in Playhouse 2000 events; as “Maria Von Trap” in The Sound of Music, and as “Marian Paroo” in The Music Man.
Interspersed with several exciting live auctions, the entertainment continued with a performance of “Prelude No. 2” by pianist Susan Matteson, and scenes from the upcoming Playhouse 2000/Schreiner University joint production of Crazy For You sung by the show’s leading lady, Lucinda Harvey.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening was a set of arias and a duet from Gershwin’s ground breaking opera Porgy and Bess performed by Soprano Kara Joy Baker – recently seen as “Julie Jordan” in P2K’s Carousel – and her husband David Baker.

The festivities were rounded out with music and dancing on the Cailloux Theater stage until midnight.

Playhouse 2000 is grateful to all of the sponsors who helped make this event possible, and to donors of live auction items, which were solicited by Committee members including Delayne Sigerman and Nancy Watts. The auction included a Bird Watching Luncheon from Ken Harris and Chris Distel, a stay at Villa Marisol in San Miguel donated by Paco Espinoza, two nights at a Comanche Trace Villa offered by Michael and Delayne Sigerman, a Pig Roast and Wine party provided by Tim Rye and Grape Juice, a pair of unique French earrings from Estate Jewelry and a signed guitar from Robert Earl Keen.

Many thanks are owed to P2K staff who assisted with the event, including Amy GoodyearSusan BurnsDevon Vanderveer and Nicholas Boland.

Funds raised at “Dinner With the Stars” support programs including The Young People’s Performances Series, the annual Shakespeare In The Park project, and the P2K Youth Theater Program.
