Carousel Earns Standing Ovations at The Cailloux

Large and enthusiastic audiences rose to their feet to applaud the opening performances of Playhouse 2000’s production of the classic musical Carousel last week.  Two more weekends of performances are planned at The Cailloux Theater.

Playgoers were effusive in their praise for the show at the opening night post-show reception, offering raves about the set, lighting, costumes, orchestra and especially the outstanding cast.

The show’s leads include Kara Joy Baker and Adam Farmer-Guerra, two highly trained performers, in the roles of Julie Jordan and Billy Bigelow, the characters whose ill-fated love affair is the central theme of the story.

They are joined by Jem Goulding and Chris Distel as Carrie Pipperidge and Enoch Snow, the secondary leads, Sebastian Tugwell as the ne’er-do-well Jigger Craigin, Dana Williams as carousel owner Mrs. Mullin, and Carole Weatherred as Cousin Nettie, who sings the shows highlight number, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”  A large chorus fills out the cast.

The remarkable set was designed by Playhouse 2000 guest artist Judd Vermillion, lights were designed by Nicholas Boland, and costumes were designed by Jem Goulding.  The show was directed by P2K Executive Director Jeffrey Brown, with Michael Kahl providing Music Direction and Heather Cunningham Choreography.  The live, professional orchestra is led by Marty Lenard.

Though it ran before the time of the “Tony” Award, Carousel was named the Drama Critics’ Circle “Best Musical” of the year for 1945/46, and the “Best Musical of the 20th Century” by the editors of TIME magazine.  In addition to multiple stage revivals, it was made into an award-winning film starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae.

Additional performances of Carousel are scheduled for July 7 through July 15 at The Cailloux Theater, 910 Main Street in Kerrville.  Show times are 7:30 on Fridays and Saturdays, with one Sunday Matinee on July 9 at 2:30.

Reserved seating is $25 for the Orchestra Section, $20 for all other sections, and $5 less per ticket for students and children.  There’s also a special “Family Package” of four tickets that saves $20.  Readers can reserve tickets today by calling (830) 896-9393 or clicking
